An effective message combined with successful organizing increases the power of your campaigns. Come join in the discussion about messaging practices in organizing campaigns. Our presenters will discuss how they have used messaging and media to influence decision-makers, build the power base of their campaigns and unite coalition members. Presenters: Chuck Laszewski, communications director at the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy Steven Renderos, project coordinator for the Minnesotano Media Empowerment Project at the Chicano Studies Department of the University of Minnesota Organizer Roundtables are free but registration is required. Light snacks will be provided. Please bring your lunch! Event I Racial and Economic Justice: Moving Forward in Faith 6 - 8:30 pm Alliance member group MICAH invites you to join them for an overview of issues that create and perpetuate segregation in our region. Learn how issues of race and economics influence significant housing and transportation investment in our communities. Find out how previous transportation decisions destroyed a thriving St. Paul neighborhood and learn about the current opportunities to benefit this community. Pastor Paul Robinson, program manager of the J. P. Shannon Leadership Institute at Wilder, and Bill Keatts, educator on anti-racism, will lead this event. Event I Community Organizing in the 21st Century: Dynamic Models, Changing Policies and Our Communities 8 - 9:30 am Community Shares of Minnesota will host this conversation, moderated by Rep. Frank Hornstein, about methods and strategies for successfully organizing diverse constituencies, improving public policies, and creating long-term positive change in our communities. Panelists include Rick Cardenas of Advocating Change Together, Ned Moore of All Parks Alliance for Change, Alina Campana of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theater and Melissa Rudnick of Jewish Community Action. RSVP by contacting Community Shares at staff@communitysharesmn.org or 651-647-0440 x 202. Resource I CURA Invites Proposals for Community-Based Research Assistance The Center for Urban and Regional Affairs (CURA) is inviting proposals for the fall 2009 semester for three community-based research programs: Neighborhood Planning for Community Revitalization, Community Assistantship Program and Communiversity. Resource I Share Your Stories at My Commute Sucks The Transportation for America campaign debuted a new site this month to help frustrated commuters and travelers to share their awful commuting stories - and to learn about how the transportation decisions made by Congress impact how we get around from day to day. Visit mycommutesucks.org to tell your stories, and read and rate the other stories there. Article I HIRE Minnesota Celebrates Successful Community Organizing “Showing up made the difference.” That was the lesson Speaker of the House Margaret Anderson Kelliher offered the crowd at HIRE Minnesota's Community Gathering last week. Kelliher was referring to the successful community organizing campaign HIRE launched at the Legislature this spring, which resulted in $2.5 million for green jobs training for low-income people and community outreach programs. Read about the legislative victory in the Liberian Journal and about the community gathering in the Insight News. Article I A CBA for Postville? The Alliance is lending technical support to a nationally unique effort to respond to a devastating immigration raid on a meat packing plant in the small town of Postville in northeastern Iowa. Postville’s major employer, Agriprocessors Inc., was cited for numerous child labor, health and safety, immigration and environmental violations in the aftermath of the raid. One of our member organizations, Jewish Community Action, has been working with this community and invited the Alliance to meet with Postville leaders to share our expertise on the use of Community Benefits Agreements (CBA) to address racial and economic justice issues. The Alliance is assisting local leaders as they craft a CBA that would expand workers’ rights, affordable housing options and ensure fair labor practices by the new owners of the plant. These measures could help avoid some of the problems of the past and encourage the future packing plant operators to be more accountable to the community. Read more about the situation in the Christian Science Monitor. Article I Central Corridor LRT Civil Rights Complaint Job Opportunity I Green Institute -- Metro CERTs Community Organizer The Green Institute seeks an organizer whose primary responsibility would be to provide organizational support to communities for the Metro Clean Energy Resource Teams (CERTs) Network. The community organizer will help the Green Institute achieve its goal to develop or assist in the development of community-oriented renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. Applications received after June 15 may not be considered. Job Opportunity I Transit for Livable Communities -- Community Organizer Alliance member group Transit for Livable Communities (TLC) is a nonprofit, nonpartisan community organization working to improve the quality of life in Minnesota through a more balanced transportation system and increased transportation choices such as bus and rail transit bicycling, and walking. TLC is expanding its organizing program by adding a second community organizer, and is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong commitment to grassroots organizing.
