Event I Harnessing the Power of Integrated Communications Noon - 1 pm In a world saturated with media, communications can be a powerful strategy to promote change. The secret to smart and effective communications isn't in the hottest new social networking site, or using text messages to reach your audience. Communications truly becomes effective when strategic communications thinking is manifested in all aspects of your work. Join Joseph Phelan, communication coordinator for the Miami Workers Center (MWC), in a conversation about how MWC has developed a shared approach to communications that is powerful and effective. Register now for Progressive Technology Project's latest Power On Network Online Presentation series on strategic communication. Event I EJAM's 6th Annual Founders Day Saturday, April 25 Save the date for Environmental Justice Advocates of Minnesota's 6th Annual Founders Day! The program will include an address by Congressman Keith Ellison, a panel of community leaders, workshops, food and fun. Attend and make this a time to create fellowship, network, learn from each other and build our power as a community. If you are interested in volunteering to help make this a successful event please call Karen Monahan 612-435-5402. Resource I Roundtable Resource: The Importance of Organizing in Community Development The Alliance recently held an Organizer Roundtable that brought Twin Cities organizers together to discuss the Importance of Organizing in Community Development. This roundtable was an opportunity for organizers to share their expertise and the challenges they face in organizing around community development efforts. Click here to read a summary (PDF) of what was discussed at the roundtable. Resource I Money for Green Jobs in the Recovery Package The $787 billion recovery package marks a big, bold and historic investment in creating green jobs and building more equitable communities. But without substantial advocacy from local and state groups, these historic federal investments may not end up in the communities that need them most. That's why PolicyLink and Green for All released a new report: Bringing Home the Green Recovery: A User's Guide to the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The in-depth guide offers tangible, up-to-date information and ideas for using and securing recovery dollars to help expand opportunity in low-income communities and communities of color. Article I MnDOT's Diversity Efforts Challenged In February, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) reported their 2007-08 performance on Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) contracting and women and minority participation on projects. While MnDOT reported some successes from its point of view, many community organizations, including the HIRE Minnesota coalition, were on hand to demand more accountability and transparency from MnDOT. Learn more about MnDOT's hiring performance and the community's demands in this article from the Minnesota Spokesman Recorder. Job Opportunity I Project Coordinator/Community Organizer - Women's Environmental Institute The Women's Environmental Institute (WEI) seeks a project coordinator/community organizer for its East Metro Environmental Justice Education and Advocacy Collaboration (EJEAC) Project. The project is focused on providing the community's right to know about toxic exposures and possible health impacts on low-income communities, Indigenous Native Americans and people of color in the east metro area. The position is open until filled, but review of applications began March 6. To contribute a news item for the next Metro Organizer, please contact Tracy Nordquist Babler at tracy@metrostability.org.
