Announcement I Alessandra Williams Named Organizer of the Year Congratulations to HIRE Minnesota Coordinator and Alliance staff member Alessandra Williams, who was named the Organizer of the Year by Grassroots Solutions.
Her nominations, submitted by several members of the HIRE Minnesota coalition, read: Alessandra Williams, is a confident, committed, professional and passionate community organizer. She was instrumental in organizing the HIRE Minnesota Coalition, a group of 70+ organizations that advocate for hiring equality and green jobs training for low-income communities and communities of color in Minnesota, and she helped the coalition secure $2.5 million for training and outreach in the 2009 Energy Programs Act. Alessandra has a remarkable ability to develop relationships, motivate people and help them build skills, all while keeping a large coalition of diverse organizations moving toward a common goal. Event I Organizer Roundtable: Community Partnerships for Success Noon - 2 pm The Alliance invites you to our February Organizer Roundtable on Community Partnerships for Success. In 2007, the Twin Cities was chosen by the national Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) to carry out a Building Sustainable Communities demonstration to promote more integrated and comprehensive approaches to community development. Twin Cities LISC will implement the project with a focus on five areas: St. Paul’s East Side, the Central Corridor, Minneapolis’ north and south sides, and the suburban community of Hopkins. They chose these areas because each offers a multitude of potential partners, opportunities and issues. Event I Capitol Labs 1 - 4 pm Capitol Labs are walking and working tours of your Minnesota State Capitol, offered by the Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. Designed to help you get comfortable navigating the building, you’ll leave knowing how to access resources for your advocacy work at the Capitol and online. On this tour, you will meet with elected officials and find everything from the information offices to the House and Senate Chambers and the Capitol Press Corps offices. Event I Minnesota Legislative Report Card on Racial Equity Release 9:30 - 11 am Join the Organizing Apprenticeship Project as it releases its 4th annual Minnesota Legislative Report Card on Racial Equity.The release will focus on the racial equity impact of key policies and major budget decisions from last year's legislative session. Gather in the State Capitol Rotunda at 9:30 am. A press conference will begin at 10 am, followed by distribution of the report card to legislators at around 10:30 am. Resource I Organizer Roundtable Resource: Developing Leadership for Sustainable Organizing At the heart of organizing is developing leadership that can guide and influence a community or organization toward accomplishing its goals. Enhancing current leadership capacity and ensuring a pipeline of future leaders is crucial to ensuring long-term organizational success. Resource I Spring 2010 Housing Policy Training The Public Policy Project invites you to participate in a FREE 16-week training (PDF) sequence on how and where housing policy decisions are made and how to effectively engage the policy making process. Article I Hennepin County Plan to Buy Land in Harrison Neighborhood Draw Fire The possibility that Hennepin County might buy land owned by the city of Minneapolis in the Bassett Creek Valley for future overnight commuter railcar storage has angered the Harrison neighborhood. The neighborhood has worked for over a decade to ensure that redevelopment of this land creates jobs and homes, and benefits the surrounding low-income community. Article I Gubernatorial Candidate Forum Recap Eleven candidates and around 550 people showed up at the Governor Candidate Forum on Transportation, Land Use and the Environment last week.
