Event I 2009 Regional Equity Series: Resisting Gentrification and Displacement

2 - 5 pm
Wednesday, April 15
McKnight Foundation, Minneapolis

The explosion of growth and reinvestment in our inner cities has been a double-edged sword. It can bring economic revival to once languishing neighborhoods and corridors, yet it often pulls affordable housing out of the reach of long-time residents. The gentrification effect is a predictable consequence of large-scale public infrastructure and private investment projects, but is it preventable?

Join us to hear Sushma Sheth from the Miami Workers Center and the national Right to the City Alliance discuss the leading strategies for mitigating the negative impacts felt by low-income communities when redevelopment activity occurs - and for capturing the positive outcomes that could help lift people out of poverty. A reactor panel of local leaders will discuss gentrification and displacement issues in the Twin Cities region. Please RSVP for Resisting Gentrification and Displacement if you plan to attend.

Sushma Sheth will also join Thao Tran of the Rainier Valley Community Development Fund and Harold Lucas of Chicago's Cultural Destination of Historic Brownsville at Stay in Place and Thrive: A Community Forum on Resisting Gentrification and Displacement on Thursday afternoon.

Event I HIRE Minnesota Rally at the Capitol for Green Jobs and Hiring Equity

3 - 5 pm
Monday, April 20
Minnesota State Capitol, St. Paul

Rally at the State Capitol for the Economy, the Environment and EQUITY

Our government is making big decisions about how to stimulate our economy. This is happening at a time when climate change is considered to be the most serious threat facing the world and while millions of people are unemployed. We can find solutions to our crumbling economy and our environmental crisis by investing in green jobs and smart infrastructure!

Please join the Alliance for Metropolitan Stability and HIRE Minnesota in rallying for investments that can help ease the climate crisis and create family-supporting wages for low-income communities and communities of color. The Alliance is one of more than 70 organizations that has joined HIRE Minnesota to seek jobs for low-income people and people of color in the healthcare, infrastructure and renewable energy industries. In order to make these jobs and training programs a reality, we need your help.

Join us in showing our support on Monday, April 20. Watch this video to learn more about why you should be there!

Event I PolicyLink: Economic Recovery Briefing Series

Noon
Conference calls every other Friday through June
Next call is on April 24

When President Obama released his budget proposal, Nobel Prize-winning economist Paul Krugman rejoiced, saying it could "set America on a fundamentally new course." After nearly a decade of budgets that neglected the poor and squeezed the working class, a new direction is long overdue. But will this new course lead to true equity in America?

To examine this question, PolicyLink is holding Demand Equity Now: A Recovery Briefing Series to discuss ways that advocates and legislators can make sure this year's federal budget is built on a foundation of shared prosperity and economic opportunity for all people.

Resource I A Map to Transportation Equity in the 2009 Recovery Act

A new report by PolicyLink and the Transportation Equity Network provides a roadmap for advocates to ensure stimulus-funded public transportation projects bring hope and economic opportunity to millions of Americans hit “first and worst” by the economic downturn.

The report provides a full breakdown of each major public transportation program and offers a comprehensive timeline of all the major transportation spending and reporting deadlines. The report, An Engine of Opportunity: A User’s Guide to Advocate for Transportation Equity in the 2009 Recovery Act, shows advocates how they can push local, state and federal leaders to make fair and just transportation investments in low-income communities and communities of color.

More and more young people are seeking jobs helping communities address urgent issues — economics and the environment, education and social justice — while developing leadership skills.
