PolicyLink is hosting a conference call to break down the equity opportunities in the bill – which could include billions of dollars in funding for low-income communities and communities of color. Event I Single Family Green Housing Rehab Training 9:30 am - 3:30 pm Minnesota Green Communities has created a model set of single family housing rehabilitation specifications designed to meet the national Green Communities criteria. These model specs will be particularly helpful for developers, builders and contractors working on rehabilitation through statewide foreclosure recovery programs. Trainer Armand Magnelli has worked in the affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization field for over 20 years and is a nationally recognized expert on a number of topics, including healthy, energy efficient and green housing rehab and development. NOTE: This is a technical training designed to help contractors, builders and trades people, and may not be of interest to administrators and city officials. Attendance is free, but advance registration is required. Event I Save the Date: Central Corridor Community Summit II 5:30 - 8 pm A coalition of community organizations is welcoming small businesses, organizations, community members and public officials to the second Central Corridor Community Summit. The summit will bring stakeholders together to discus the future of the Central Corridor LRT project, including: • Reviewing and affirming the work of the first Community Summit held in March and the Community Statement (PDF) that resulted Resource I Organizer Roundtable Resource: Campaign Messaging Article I Addressing Disparities: Strengthen Opportunity, Set Goals, Measure Effects Jermaine Toney of the Organizing Apprenticeship Project published this commentary in the Pioneer Press, which details the success of HIRE Minnesota's organizing efforts to pass the energy programs bill with significant commitments to low-income communities and communities of color. Toney says that this model is one that can be built on to ensure our public policies decrease racial and economic disparities in Minnesota. Article I Jump Starting Racial Justice In his historic Philadelphia speech on race, then-candidate Barack Obama genuinely tried to unify us in facing our failures. Many people hoped that President Obama would be our racial savior, single-handedly bringing an end to centuries of struggle against discrimination. Some were quick to declare that racism, as we knew it, was over. Article I Transportation, Housing, and Environment Join Forces Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency announced an unprecedented interagency Partnership for Sustainable Communities. The partnership is designed to help improve access to affordable housing, more transportation options and lower transportation costs while protecting the environment in communities nationwide. Check out Fresh Energy's summary of the key points of the partnership, and PolicyLink's reaction to what could be a transformative new program. Article I Outcomes of the Building Sensible Communities Legislative Campaign This year, the Alliance supported partner organizations Fresh Energy, 1000 Friends of Minnesota, Transit for Livable Communities and Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy in promoting the Building Sensible Communities bill at the Capitol. The bill would play an important part in simultaneously addressing global warming pollution and other quality of life issues such as air pollution, congestion, personal transportation costs and dwindling open space. Check out Fresh Energy's blog to read about what happened this session and what work is still left. Article I The Outlook for Sustainable Green Jobs in Minnesota One big myth about green jobs is the claim that these jobs are not economically viable and need government aid to survive. The Pew Charitable Trusts released a study that will hopefully put an end to that myth. The study, summarized at Minnesota 2020, covers employment at green jobs over the past decade and has good news for Minnesota and the rest of the country. Job Opportunity I Grassroots Solutions Project Manager Grassroots Solutions is seeking someone with good organizing and project management skills to join the Grassroots Solutions team as a project manager. This position would manage day-to-day tasks, responsibilities and communications with clients and work closely with the senior project manager and/or principal to plan and execute canvasses or other grassroots projects, identify strategic implications for clients and develop plans for advocacy or electoral projects.
