Event I Equity Opportunities in the New Transportation Bill

1:30 - 2:30 pm CST
Friday, June 26

With the release of the transportation reauthorization bill last week, the starting gun has officially sounded on the effort to create real transportation reform in America. PolicyLink is hosting a conference call to break down the equity opportunities in the bill  – which could include billions of dollars in funding for low-income communities and communities of color.

Minnesota Green Communities has created a model set of single family housing rehabilitation specifications designed to meet the national Green Communities criteria. Resource I Organizer Roundtable Resource: Campaign Messaging

Earlier this month, the Alliance held an Organizer Roundtable that brought Twin Cities organizers together to discuss campaign messaging and its importance in organizing strategy. The roundtable provided an opportunity for organizers to join in a discussion about messaging practices in organizing campaigns, and to ask questions of regional leaders in organizing communications. Read a summary of the discussion and the lessons learned (PDF) at the roundtable on the Alliance web site (PDF).

Article I Addressing Disparities: Strengthen Opportunity, Set Goals, Measure Effects

Jermaine Toney of the Organizing Apprenticeship Project published this commentary in the Pioneer Press, which details the success of HIRE Minnesota's organizing efforts to pass the energy programs bill with significant commitments to low-income communities and communities of color. Toney says that this model is one that can be built on to ensure our public policies decrease racial and economic disparities in Minnesota.

Article I Jump Starting Racial Justice

In his historic Philadelphia speech on race, then-candidate Barack Obama genuinely tried to unify us in facing our failures. Many people hoped that President Obama would be our racial savior, single-handedly bringing an end to centuries of struggle against discrimination. Some were quick to declare that racism, as we knew it, was over.

Yet familiar patterns and headlines persist: A spike in racial hate crimes and hate groups. More police killings of people of color. Skyrocketing unemployment rates among blacks and Latinos. Crackdowns on immigrants. A historic loss of wealth for people of color forced into foreclosure. And racist speech all over the Internet.

The good news is that sensible solutions exist.
This article from YES! Magazine discusses several approaches to advancing racial equity through public policy, including the efforts of the Alliance, Jewish Community Action, Community Stabilization Project, Aurora St. Anthony Neighborhood Development Corporation and Organizing Apprenticeship Project to implement a Racial Equity Impact Policy in St. Paul.

Article I Transportation, Housing, and Environment Join Forces

Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the Environmental Protection Agency announced an unprecedented interagency Partnership for Sustainable Communities. The partnership is designed to help improve access to affordable housing, more transportation options and lower transportation costs while protecting the environment in communities nationwide. Check out Fresh Energy's summary of the key points of the partnership, and PolicyLink's reaction to what could be a transformative new program.

Article I Outcomes of the Building Sensible Communities Legislative Campaign

This year, the Alliance supported partner organizations Fresh Energy, 1000 Friends of Minnesota, Transit for Livable Communities and Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy in promoting the Building Sensible Communities bill at the Capitol. The bill would play an important part in simultaneously addressing global warming pollution and other quality of life issues such as air pollution, congestion, personal transportation costs and dwindling open space. Check out Fresh Energy's blog to read about what happened this session and what work is still left.

Article I The Outlook for Sustainable Green Jobs in Minnesota

One big myth about green jobs is the claim that these jobs are not economically viable and need government aid to survive. The Pew Charitable Trusts released a study that will hopefully put an end to that myth. The study, summarized at Minnesota 2020, covers employment at green jobs over the past decade and has good news for Minnesota and the rest of the country.
