Event I HIRE Minnesota Birthday Party Tonight!

6 - 9 pm
Tuesday, December 15
J.D. Hoyt's, Minneapolis

HIRE Minnesota's 1st birthday has arrived! One year ago, 200 grassroots activists and community members gathered at the Minneapolis Urban League on a cold, snowy evening to hear about a new green jobs and hiring equity campaign: HIRE Minnesota. Since this first town hall meeting, thousands have joined our initiative to secure job opportunities for communities of color and low income communities in the infrastructure and renewable energy fields.

Come join us as we look back on the impact we’ve made - and will continue to make - in putting Minnesota’s investments to work for our communities and our environment. We look forward to celebrating our first year of victories with you.

Resource I Organizer Roundtable Resource: Tools from the Rail~volution Conference

A cohort of 36 people from nonprofits and government agencies attended the Rail~Volution Conference in Boston at the end of October. Rail~Volution is a conference for practitioners from all perspectives who believe strongly in the role of land use and transit as equal partners in the quest for greater livability and greater communities. The conference provided a unique opportunity for innovative minds to develop solutions to issues that affect livability in cities, towns and regions of all sizes and shapes.

The Alliance held an Organizer Roundtable in November to allow Twin Cities organizers who weren't able to attend the conference to learn from those who did. Even if you didn't attend the roundtable, this Organizer Roundtable Resource (PDF) will point you toward helpful links and documents to inform your work.

Resource I Free Course in Theatre of the Oppressed

6:30 - 8:30 pm
Wednesdays, February - April
Location TBA

Are you looking for new tools to do public work on an issue that you care about?  Are you looking for ways to laugh, learn and build a public life?  Do you want to be part of a broader Twin Cities community of artists and community organizers?

This spring, the Twin Cities Experimental College will be offering a class in Theatre of the Oppressed.  Theatre of the Oppressed is a method of interactive theatre, developed in Brazil during the 1960s-70s as a technique of resistance against military dictatorship, and now practiced by oppressed communities around the world.  It prepares people and groups for political action by using their whole bodies to explore problems and discover and rehearse new solutions. This class will be free of charge, and people of all levels of experience are welcome.

If you’re interested in participating or want more information, please contact the class co-facilitators, Nickia Jensen and Ben Fink.

Resource I Love your community? Your neighborhood? Your block? Let's hear it!

What do you love about your community? What are you thankful for? Is it that coffee shop on the corner where all the neighbors gather? Is it the new bike path or sidewalk that lets you walk your son or daughter to school each morning? Is it the beautiful scenic open spaces nearby? Is it the walkable downtown that lights up for the holidays, or the lush park around the corner?

Your community isn't a given - it's a gift. Tell Smart Growth America what you love about the place you call home and they'll publish the best answers on their blog for people across the country to read.

Article I Bronx Community Groups Seek a CBA to Link Living Wages to Subsidized Development

This week, the New York City Council will vote on whether to proceed with one of the most exciting development projects in the city - the Kingsbridge Armory, the giant castle in the northwest Bronx that has been vacant for years. The city has approved more than $60 million in public subsidies for the developer, the Related Companies, and the community is eager to welcome a bustling shopping center to a neighborhood starved for commerce and good jobs. The city, however, is hesitating to attach a living-wage requirement to the project, stating that the project can't be successful financially and pay living wages. Find out how the community is responding in the Huffington Post.
