This draft is the product of an earlier Central Corridor Community Summit where community members, small businesses, and organizations shared their visions, issues and solutions for the future of the neighborhoods and business communities along the Central Corridor. Event I A Social Justice Analysis of Climate Change 5:30 - 7 pm Join Headwaters Foundation for Justice at the final session of its movement building series at Bryant Lake Bowl! You will join with other activists to explore how the global issue of climate change is tightly linked to the work local activists have been organizing around for years - issues such as economic justice, human rights, affordable housing and racial justice. Event I Managing Neighborhood Change 1 - 4:30 pm Please join the Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers and Twin Cities LISC for a special Community Development Conversation on Managing Neighborhood Change with Alan Mallach. Managing Neighborhood Change offers a new framework for CDCs and others to analyze their local market and other neighborhood conditions, review the range of strategies that have proven to be effective in that type of market, and refine their approach to help achieve sustainable, strategic neighborhood change. Alan Mallach is a non-resident fellow at the Brookings Institution and a senior fellow at the National Housing Institute. Please register by May 4. Event I Mad as Hell? Organize for Social Justice May 21-24, 2009 Pedagogy and Theatre of the Oppressed (PTO) is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to challenge oppressive systems by promoting critical thinking and social justice. PTO organizes an annual meeting that focuses on the work of liberatory educators, activists, artists and community organizers. The theme of this year's conference is Mad as Hell? Now Move (or Draw, or Act...): Organizing for Social Justice. Participants will learn new community-building techniques for social justice, connect to various applied art tactics, engage with best practices in critical education and and learn about social justice in new ways. Resource I What Does the Stimulus Means for Minnesota? The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act was signed into law on February 13, and we are now beginning to understand how some of this $11.4 billion is going to flow into Minnesota. The state of Minnesota has set up an official web site to coordinate efforts related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, where you can find detailed descriptions of the funding streams, anticipated amounts, the state agency responsible (PDF) for administering the funds and contact people at each of the state agencies. Resource I Job Quality in the New Green Economy Green jobs are not just a short-term fix for the recession. Increasingly, these jobs are understood as central to the future of our nation and our planet. Shifting to a green economy creates an unparalleled opportunity to address not only unemployment and the climate crisis, but also deeply rooted social problems such as poverty and inequality. Decisions made today about green jobs will have profound consequences for our economy, environment and social fabric for decades to come. A new report (PDF) from Good Jobs First serves as a guide for how to produce a large quantity of green jobs, that still deliver high quality for workers. Resource I Organizer Roundtable Resources on Research and Popular Education The Alliance held two Organizer Roundtables in April that brought local organizers together to learn from one another about research and popular education. Even if you weren't able to attend the roundtables, you can still learn from the presenters and other organizers who attended. Check out these resources on The Role of Research in Effective Campaign Strategy (PDF) and Education for Liberation: The Paulo Freire Methodology (PDF). Article I Despite Record Ridership, Transit Cutbacks Across the Nation With ridership at record highs, transit agencies across the country are facing unprecedented fiscal crises in this economic downturn, with many considering layoffs, service cuts and fare hikes that are hitting at the worst possible time. Transportation for America has gathered information on the cutbacks facing transit in 85 metro areas, including the Twin Cities, and is urging citizens to take action and advocate for transit systems as an important part of the nation and its economic recovery. Job Opportunity I Family & Children's Service - Somali Community Building Intern Family & Children’s Service, which aims to build strong families, vital communities and capable children, is seeking a Somali community building intern. Intern responsibilities may include assisting with the planning of the Peace, Power & Unity Conference and working with several different community organizing initiatives such as the Whittier Youth Program, Bluff Park Homes and community leadership development.
