You may have ideas about how to create unexpected allies, or help people see their connections to one another. You may be looking for ways to create a compelling vision for your organization that go beyond geographic or issue identity. Many of us have lost when elected officials, potential allies, and our own organizations act out of a small idea of who we are and who we serve, and allow ourselves to be pitted against one another. Let’s talk about how to prevent division, and unite! Resource I Report on The Ecology of Organizing Roundtable In April and May of 2010, organizers from throughout the Twin Cities came together for two Alliance for Metropolitan Stability Organizer Roundtables to learn about and discuss the Ecology of Organizing, a system of thinking devised by David Nicholson of the Headwaters Foundation. Karen Starr and David Nicholson then facilitated a group dialogue, based on the unique experiences of the organizers in attendance. Full text of this report here. Resource I Guide to Green Living for Home Owners A recent addition to the Smart Growth Online Library is from HOME in Rochester, NY. The HOME people refurbish abandoned or foreclosed properties to the green practices listed in the Guide to Green Living, including aspects of daily living. For new ideas, or just to reinforce what you are already doing, check it out! Resource I Status on Women and Girls in Minnesota Did you know that accredited daycare costs as much as college tuition? How great is the wage disparity between 40- year-olds of different gender? Researched and written by the University of Minnesota Humphrey Institute’s Center on Women & Public Policy, in partnership with the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota, this report outlines the current state of Minnesota's women by ethnicity. Article I Twin Cities’ “Shameful Little Secret” Exposed Charles Hallman of the Twin Cities’ Daily Planet reports on the local implications of the Economic Policy Institute's report, including the protest organized by the HIRE Minnesota Coalition. "We should all be outraged and ashamed," declares (JOBS NOW Executive Director Kris) Jacobs. "This should change the debate about what is wrong with the Minnesota labor market. This can't be ignored by the gubernatorial candidates. It cannot be ignored by the press or the schools. It cannot be ignored, period." Article I Youth Farm & Market Projects Bloom and Enrich the Lives of Urban Children Since the mid-1990s, MinnPost.Com reports, Youth Farm and Market Projects have given urban children an opportunity to plant, tend, harvest and eat food they have grown themselves. More than urban farming, this program brings together Twin Cities' young people of all backgrounds and grows leaders organically, through participation in the program. "Couple those goals with the recession and a national concern about childhood obesity and you'll understand why this program is flourishing." Article I Regional Growth Future: Getting It Right "More American regions should be emulating the model," concludes Citiwire's Neil Peirce in his reflection on 30 years of observing the growth of his region, the Puget Sound. Overcoming the early tensions between economic development and nature preservation, the model known as the Cascade Agenda grew to be inclusive in its outreach and intentional in its planning.
