Event I Central Corridor Community Summit

March 7 - 8
Central Corridor Resource Center, St. Paul

Over the past several years community members, businesses and organizations have been asked to share their concerns about the impacts of the Central Corridor LRT project. From the loss of on-street parking to missing stations at Western, Victoria and Hamline, to gentrification and increases in neighborhood traffic, the issues are many and very real for those who live and work in the corridor.

The Saint Paul-Minneapolis Central Corridor Community Summit will join current work on these issues with new thinking from the community to create a comprehensive community vision, guiding principles and action strategies that can be advanced with a unified voice. The ultimate goal is to use the outcomes of the summit to engage elected officials, the Metropolitan Council, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, and community stakeholders in the development of a written agreement that will coordinate efforts and hold everyone accountable for the future health and well-being of all our communities and businesses along the Central Corridor.

For more information, contact Carol Swenson of the District Councils Collaborative of Saint Paul and Minneapolis at 651.249.6877 or carol@dcc-stpaul-mpls.org.

Resource I Call For Nominations for the Windcall Award to Social Justice Leaders

Organizers work hard in all dimensions of strategy, community building, organizational leadership and movement building, but we often skimp on the time needed to keep ourselves creative, healthy and energized.  Have you taken a rest lately?  Do you know any burned out colleagues?  Do you need to renew your energy in the face of economic and political turmoil?   Apply now for the Windcall Residency Award, or nominate a colleague.

Windcall Residents spend 2-3 weeks in beautiful natural settings  with a small group of social justice leaders who share a open time and space for reflection, artistic exploration and transformative learning to tap your creative juices and bring renewed energy to the work.  Windcall is accepting applications and nominations for 2009-2010 residencies (sites in Vermont, Montana or California).  The deadline to apply is April 30.

Article I States Wear Blinders On The True Costs of Sprawl

These days, recession-pummeled Americans are avidly following the federal stimulus package. They’re arguing whether stimulus money should go to the arts, or to repair and expand infrastructure, such as fixing bridges, boosting transit or finishing urban loop roads. It’s about time people noticed those public works projects.

But is the welcome public attention also spotlighting one of the reasons our infrastructure spending is so high–the vast sums required by suburban sprawl? Amid plenty of talk at a recent two-day conference about huge needs and inadequate money, one topic went all but unmentioned: sprawl and its costs. Read more at citiwire.net.
